On Tuesday 20 November, Jamie Clarke Fibrous Plastering apprentice studying at Southall Community College won Apprentice of the Year Runner-up at The Plaisterers’ Company Training Awards 2018. The event took place at The Plaisterers Hall where Plastering and Drylining professionals, educational establishments, students and apprentices from across the country came together to celebrate excellence in the industry.

Jamie, who began his apprenticeship in November 2016 at Thomas & Wilson, said: “I am absolutely thrilled I won Apprentice of the Year Runner-up. I definitively know I am on the right path to building a strong foundation and becoming a qualified plaster. During my three years at 91ɬ, I’ve learnt the level of professionalism expected in the Plastering trade, this helped me prepare myself to meet the industry’s standard.”

The awards were presented by the Lord Mayor, Alderman Peter Estlin and celebrity host Alan Dedicoat, the voice of Strictly Come Dancing.

Roger Bannister, Thomas & Wilson Director nominated Jamie for the award, he said: “Jamie showed genuine interest from the start with clear determination for improving skills. I was impressed with his tidiness and ability. Very occasionally a young person comes along who is exceptional and a credit to the industry. Jamie is one of these people.”

Matthew Morgan, Apprentice Assessor at 91ɬ, attended the event with our winner, he said: “As Jamie’s NVQ assessor, also working closely with the Plaisterers’ Livery Company, I get to work with and help train some of the best young plastering apprentices in the country. Jamie is truly up there with the best and thoroughly deserves recognition at these awards. He’s a committed professional with an excellent level of skill and attention to detail. He’s a real asset to his company and to the fibrous craft.”

The Plaisterers’ Training Awards recognise the highest standards of achievement in training and education within the UK plastering trade, closely supporting the trade through a number of initiatives since their introduction in 2001.
